Job Title: County Planner 
Status:  Full time, Salary:  $37,069 – 59,311
Pay Grade:  111, FLSA Status:  Non-exempt


Essex County, Virginia, is accepting applications for the newly created full-time position of County Planner.  Essex County is a predominantly rural county located on the Virginia Middle Peninsula along the banks of the Rappahannock River. This position will be responsible for a variety of community planning and land use code administration functions including zoning ordinance and subdivision ordinance permitting and administration.  The County Planner will work closely with the public, county staff, and elected and appointed County Boards and Commissions including the Planning Commission, Board of Zoning Appeals, and Board of Supervisors.  Excellent writing and communication skills are a must.  This position will report to and be under the supervision of the County Administrator.

Minimum requirements for the position are a Bachelors’ degree in Planning, Public Administration, or related field with three or more years of public or private sector community planning experience with demonstrated knowledge and experience in zoning and subdivision ordinance administration and enforcement, or any equivalent combination of education and experience which demonstrate the ability to perform the duties of the position. Experience with Chesapeake Bay Preservation Act or other coastal/wetland regulations are desirable.  Applicants which possess experience and working knowledge of ESRI ArcGIS will receive preferred status among candidates. Job Title:  Maintenance Assistant
Status:  Temporary Part-time, Hourly Rate - $10.77, Approx. 24 hours per week, 12 weeks

Essex County is seeking an individual to perform semi-skilled work in the repair and maintenance of the County's buildings and grounds. This work involves operating medium to light machinery and using hand tools to assist with HVAC, other building and maintenance repairs and landscaping duties. The preferred applicant will have experience operating all types of lawn care equipment.  A valid Virginia driver’s license is required.  This position reports to the Director of Facilities.

ESSEX COUNTY SHERIFF

Job Title: Communications Operator - Dispatch 

Status:  Full Time, Salary - $30,688 Grade 108, with benefits and
 Part-time, Hourly Rate - $14.75, no benefits

The Sheriff of Essex County is seeking a full time and part-time individuals to perform radio and communications work in the communications division of the Sheriff’s Department on an assigned shift. The Communications Operator position performs skilled emergency service work that involves receiving emergency 911 and non-emergency requests for law enforcement assistance, determining nature/urgency of law enforcement, initiating law enforcement or other emergency personnel action (i.e., Sheriff, Fire, Public works, Animal Control, Virginia Highway Department, etc.) and maintaining close contact with field units to monitor response and needed support requirements. Employee must be able to operate a computer terminal connected to the Virginia Criminal and the National Crime Information Center. Employee must exercise considerable tact and firmness in obtaining information from distressed person(s). Employee must exercise independent judgment and initiative in receiving messages, responding to emergency situations, and dispatching calls. This position performs work under the supervision of the Communications Supervisor.  This position works varied shifts to include nights, weekends, and holidays.

A high school diploma or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job is required.  Must complete Basic Dispatch School and obtain VCIN Certification within first year of employment. A criminal background check is required.
