"Make mine Sheetz," are three words you might soon start hearing around Tappahannock. Sheetz Inc., a 24-hour gasoline and convenience store chain, opened its newest location in Essex County on June 1, 2000.

Sheetz Inc. opened a new store in Tappahannock on June 1, 2000. The 4,300 sq. foot facility sells sandwiches, subs, and grocery products in addition to top quality gasoline, which registered $1.19/gallon (87 Octane) on opening day.

Sheetz's new Tappahannock location Since 1952, when company founder Bob Sheetz opened the first store, Sheetz has delivered innovation and convenience to millions of Americans with over 200 stores in five states. Convenience means convenient locations, great service, quality products, fair pricing, and spacious stores. Innovation, simply, means the concept of "MTO" food. The first gasoline chain to offer its own foods (think Subway and the Radio Grill as one) Made To Order, Sheetz sells fresh submarine and deli sandwiches, salads, nachos, hot dogs and hamburgers, and assorted breakfast treats. Customers place their order through one of three "touch screen" computers that allows each customer to select his or her fixings and toppings. Only the finest ingredients compliment Sheetz food: Pennsylvania Dutch meats, cheeses churned from fresh, whole milk, and breads fresh baked in stores. In addition, a beer cooler, magazine section, a variety of groceries and house products, and three grades of Sheetz gasoline are always available.

Two Sheetz employees take a break from making "Made To Order" subs and sandwhiches which they served fresh to dignitaries who were present for a sneak peak of the new convenience store, Wednesday, May 31.

Sheetz employees in action "We are not just your average convenience store," says store manager Tamiko Amos. "At Sheetz, you will find we are completely dedicated to our 'Total Customer Focus' program and equally dedicated to the community through our employment opportunities and area involvement. We serve refreshements and our signature made-to-order products with company pride." But perhaps what people will appreciate best about Sheetz is its people. Sheetz's employee programs are unparalleled in the industry. "And that means excellent service and products for you," says Sheetz Inc. district manager Charlie Albarano. A native of Fredericksburg, Mr. Albarano is adamant about his company's commitment to civic service.

"We invite our law enforcement officers, ambulance, paramedics, and emergency workers to visit us for free coffee, fountain drinks, and snacks when in uniform," adds Mr. Albarano. "We appreciate their dedication to the community and do our part to offer them our services. Their presence around this store will make Sheetz a safer place."

Sheetz employees are encouraged to play an active role in their communities by contributing to and supporting a variety of local organizations. On a national scale, Sheetz has worked to raise funds and volunteer support for projects including Sheetz Family Christmas and Special Olympics. Since employees started the Sheetz Family Christmas program in 1992, more than $1.4 million has been raised in addition to fulfilling the Christmas wishes of more than 11,250 deserving children in their communities. Sheetz is also a proud supporter and one of the largest, single contributors to Special Olympics. Sheetz has donated more than $900,000 to the organization since 1991. It has become a tradition for many Sheetz employees to volunteer their time to help with the summer and winter games sponsored by the Special Olympics organizations in their area.

Tappahannock-Essex County Mayor Edward L. Hammond, who was present to perform the ceremonial ribbon cutting, welcomed Sheetz to Tappahannock and said he looked forward to the positive economic impact Sheetz will bring to Essex County. "Tappahannock has been the retail and commercial center for this region for many years and we feel that Sheetz will be an outstanding and welcome addition to the business community. Sheetz will offer our citizens quality gasoline at a fair price at this clean, beautiful facility." Assistant County Administrator, Linda E. Lumpkin, was also on hand to thank Sheetz for its investment in the Tappahannock-Essex County community. "This is a convenience store a cut above the others...exactly what you need after a long day in the car," said Ms. Lumpkin. "There's something for everyone here - sandwiches, sodas, coffee, snacks, magazines, and even gas and oil products."

"From the moment I set foot here, I have felt very welcome," said Mr. Albarano. "We hope this newest Tappahannock store will serve the citizens of Essex County for many years to come."
