Dunbrooke Road Reopen

Posted on 09/30/2020

Route 620 (Dunbrooke Road) in Essex County has been reopened today. The detour has been lifted two months ahead of schedule after the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) replaced the structurally deficient bridge over Piscataway Creek. In December 2019, VDOT closed Dunbrooke Road between Route 642 and Route 622, crews replaced the 1962 structure with a 40-foot-long concrete single slab bridge on new concrete abutments. The new bridge is nearly double the length of the previous crossing. It also has a smoother travel surface. The former timber deck structure had a weight restriction of three tons for all vehicle types. The new bridge has no weight limit restrictions. The $1.6 million project was expected to be complete in late November 2020. The crews were able to reopen Dunbrooke Road today  after a bridge safety inspection, two months ahead of schedule.
