VINEYARD VINO VOLTURNO
The only commercial vineyard in operation in Essex County was established in 1996 by Soehnke and Gert Hasselhof, M.D. They brought their interest in and knowledge of grapes with them from their native Germany . Today the vineyard includes 26 acres planted to 9 grapes including both French and German varieties. The vineyard was sold in 2006 to Luigi Traettino and renamed. Grapes harvested at Vineyard Vino Volturno are sold to various Virginia wineries such as Cooper Vineyards, Naked Mountain Vineyard, and Williamsburg Winery.
