  • Register to Vote

    Virginia Residents may register:

    • online at the Virginia Department of Elections
    • by mail-in Voter Registration Application
    • In-Person at any General Registrar's office: The office of the Essex County General registrar is open from 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., Monday - Friday, except holidays, for this purpose. We are located at:
      • Voter Registration and Elections, 205 S. Cross Street, Suite B, PO Box 1561 Tappahannock, VA 22560-1561

    • A Resident of the State of Virginia
    • A citizen of the United States
    • 18 years of age by the next general election
    • If convicted of a felony, your right to vote must have been restored
    • Not currently declared mentally incompetent by a court of law
  • Polling locations are ONLY open on Election Day 6:00am-7:00pm.

    Your polling location can be found on the lower left corner of your voter ID card, by visiting the Virginia Department of Elections website or by calling the Voter Registration & Elections Office at 443-4611.

    Additional information about Absentee Voting can be found at the Virginia Department of Elections website.

  • You may return your voted absentee ballot

    • By mail in the postage paid envelope provided with your ballot. The ballot must  be postmarked on or before Election Day and received in the registrar’s office by noon the Friday after the election.
    • By hand delivery to the General Registrar. The ballot must be delivered by 7pm on Election Day.
    • At the secure drop off location inside the General Registrar's office. The ballot must be dropped off by 7pm on Election Day.
    • In the secure drop box located at each polling location on Election Day only (6am-7pm).

  • Candidate Information

    Interested in running for office? Visit the Virginia Department of Elections website.

    Generally, all candidates must meet the following minimum qualifications.

    • A candidate must be qualified to vote for and to hold the office being sought.
    • A candidate must have been a resident of the Commonwealth of Virginia for at least one year immediately preceding the election.

    Informational Bulletin & Forms

    The Virginia Department of Elections has developed and published candidate informational bulletins specific to each office type. In addition to the qualifications, forms, and filing requirements, candidate information bulletins provide candidates with information they will need to run for office.

    You may download the information through the links provided​ below or contact the Department of Elections to request that a candidate informational bulletin and candidate forms be mailed to you for a $10 charge. Please send your check payable to the Department of Elections to:
