Job Title: Zoning Administrator (FT Exempt)

Essex County is seeking a full-time Zoning Administrator to act as the administrative officer for the purpose of effecting the proper administration of the Zoning Ordinance and Land Development & Subdivision Control Ordinance of Essex County.  The Zoning Administrator is responsible for conducting zoning inspections, enforcing adopted zoning regulations through inspection of sites alleged to be in violation and ensuring that violations are brought into compliance.  The Zoning Administrator shall make interpretations of the County’s Zoning and Land Development & Subdivision Control Ordinances.  Position works closely with property owners, contractors, architects, surveyors, engineers and other professionals, public officials, board and commissions, staff, and the County Administrator.  The Zoning Administrator will also act as the Plats Officer and Subdivision Agent for Essex County.  Attendance at Board of Supervisors, Planning Commission, Wetlands Meeting, Board of Zoning Appeals meetings, as required.   Other duties as required.

Qualifications include a degree in planning or a related field and training and experience in zoning administration is preferred. Equivalent experience in local government zoning and development administration may be substituted for relevant college degree. Certified Zoning Administrator preferred or ability to obtain within 12 months of hire date required.  Experience with the Chesapeake Bay Preservation Act or other coastal/wetland regulations are highly desirable. 

The salary for the Zoning Administrator position will depend on the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate.
