Trap, Neuter, Return Program

In a Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) program, feral or community  cats are humanely trapped, brought to a veterinarian to be spayed or neutered, vaccinated, ear tipped (the universal sign that a cat has been neutered and vaccinated), and then returned to their outdoor home. TNR is considered the only effective method of stabilizing feral cat colonies.  Cats that are part of a TNR program are healthier, roam and fight less thus make better neighbors.

Indian Rivers Humane Society can provide feral cat certificates to residents of King William, King and Queen and Essex counties that are feeding and providing shelter to feral cats. They cover spaying /neutering, 1-year rabies vaccine, flea check and ear tipping at no cost to the resident. These certificates can be used at Tri County Animal Hospital in Mattaponi near West Point and are valid for 3 months.

For a companion or pet cat IRHS can provide a companion cat certificate which will pay $35 towards neutering a male cat or $50 towards spaying a female cat.

The companion cat certificates can be used at Tri County Animal Hospital in Mattaponi, Tappahannock Veterinary Hospital in Tappahannock, King William Veterinary Clinic and Aylett Animal Hospital in Aylett.
