Important Wetlands Announcement

At this time Essex County does not have an ordinance that complies with Virginia Code § 28.2-1302; therefore, any applications for permits requesting to use or develop any wetland in the county in accordance with Sec. 34-22 or use or alter any coastal primary sand dune in the county in accordance with Sec. 34-63 should be submitted directly to VMRC in accordance with Virginia Code Sections § 28.2-1306(A) and § 28.2-1406(A), respectively.  If an inquiry is received, applicants should be advised to apply for those permits directly with VMRC.  This procedure will stay in effect until that time the County adopts a current wetlands zoning ordinance.  Posted:  2/2/2024
