General Information:

Virginia’s city and county Treasurer’s collect taxes and local fees on behalf of the local government. The Treasurer is responsible for every form of revenue which comes to his or her locality including

  • Personal Property Taxes
  • Real Estate Taxes
  • License Taxes
  • Permit Fees
  • State Income Taxes
  • Estimated Income Taxes
  • Court, Sheriff, and Clerk Fees

The elected post of Treasurer was created in the Virginia Constitution of 1870. The Essex County Treasurer also collects for delinquent Emergency Medical Services. To see if you qualify for an exemption, click below to view the Resolution or download hardship form.

How to Pay:

  • In person: 321 Prince Street, Tappahannock, VA 22560

  • By mail: P.O. Box 489, Tappahannock, VA 22560
    • Make check(s) payable to ESSEX COUNTY TREASURER
  • Online: Access online services
  • 24 Hour Drop Box: Located in front of the building.

If using a credit/debit card a 2.95% convenience fee will be added.
If using an e-check a $1.95 fee will be added. There is a $25.00 returned check fee if an e-check is returned.

**If you have a DMV Stop there is a $25 fee due to release it. Please contact our office to verify additional fees.** If paid online the DMV Stop will be removed the next business day.

 

Important Dates to Remember:

  • January 31st: Must purchase new dog tags
  • March 1st: Personal property form due to the Commissioner of the Revenue
  • April 15th: Federal income tax return due
  • May 1st: Virginia income tax return due
  • June 5th: First half real estate and personal property tax due (we accept items postmarked by this date)
  • December 5th: Second half real estate and personal property tax due (we accept items postmarked by this date)
